Root Canal & Pain Relief
Specialized Endodontic Care
Root Canal & Pain Relief focuses on diagnosing and treating problems affecting the dental pulp and tissues surrounding the root of the tooth. The primary goal of endodontic treatment is to control infection, relieve dental pain, and preserve the natural tooth whenever possible.
Dr. Snehal Vachheta Kotak, MDS – Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics, provides specialized care for patients requiring root canal treatment, retreatment, management of persistent dental pain, dental infections, traumatic dental injuries, and related endodontic procedures.
Every case is evaluated individually to identify the source of the problem and determine the most appropriate treatment approach.
Root Canal Treatment (RCT)
Root Canal Treatment is performed when the pulp inside a tooth becomes inflamed, infected, or irreversibly damaged.
This may occur because of deep dental decay, repeated dental procedures, cracks or fractures, trauma, or other causes that affect the internal tissues of the tooth.
During treatment, the affected pulp is carefully removed, the root canal system is cleaned and disinfected, and the canals are appropriately filled and sealed.
The objective is to eliminate the source of infection and preserve the natural tooth rather than removing it whenever the tooth can be successfully treated and restored.
Root Canal Treatment may be considered when you experience:
- Persistent or severe tooth pain
- Pain while chewing or biting
- Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold
- Swelling around the tooth
- Dental abscess or infection
- Deep tooth decay
- Discoloration associated with a damaged tooth
- A tooth affected by trauma
Single-Sitting Root Canal Treatment
In selected cases, Root Canal Treatment can be completed in a single appointment.
Single-sitting treatment may be considered when the clinical condition of the tooth, infection status, canal anatomy, and other factors make it appropriate.
The treatment involves careful cleaning and shaping of the root canal system, followed by appropriate disinfection and sealing.
However, not every tooth is suitable for single-sitting treatment. The number of appointments is determined according to the individual clinical condition of the tooth rather than following a fixed approach for every patient.
Re-Root Canal Treatment
A tooth that has previously undergone Root Canal Treatment can sometimes develop symptoms or infection again.
In such situations, Re-Root Canal Treatment may be considered after detailed evaluation.
Possible reasons for retreatment may include persistent infection, incomplete treatment of the root canal system, leakage, reinfection, or other factors affecting the previously treated tooth.
During retreatment, the existing root canal filling material may need to be removed so that the canal system can be carefully reassessed, cleaned, disinfected, and treated again.
The objective is to address the underlying problem and determine whether the natural tooth can continue to be maintained.
Treatment of Persistent Dental Pain
Persistent dental pain can have different causes, and identifying the actual source of pain is an important part of endodontic care.
Pain may sometimes originate from inflammation or infection within a tooth, while in other situations the cause may be related to previous dental treatment, trauma, cracks, or surrounding dental tissues.
A detailed clinical assessment helps determine the likely source of symptoms before treatment is recommended.
Depending on the findings, treatment may involve endodontic care, retreatment, monitoring, or referral for further evaluation when the symptoms are not caused by the tooth itself.
Common symptoms that require evaluation include:
- Persistent toothache
- Pain while biting
- Sensitivity to hot or cold
- Pain that continues after eating or drinking
- Swelling around a tooth
- Recurring pain from a previously treated tooth
- Unexplained discomfort in a particular tooth
Management of Dental Abscess & Infection
A dental abscess can develop when bacterial infection affects the tissues inside or around a tooth.
An abscess may be associated with pain, swelling, tenderness, or drainage and requires professional dental evaluation.
When the source of infection is related to the dental pulp, appropriate endodontic treatment may be required to address the infected tooth and preserve it when possible.
Treatment is planned according to the clinical findings and may involve managing the infection, treating the root canal system, and restoring the tooth appropriately after endodontic treatment.
Early assessment is important when swelling, significant pain, or signs of dental infection are present.
Internal Tooth Bleaching
Some teeth may become dark or discoloured following trauma or previous Root Canal Treatment.
When the discoloration originates from within the tooth, Internal Tooth Bleaching may be considered as a cosmetic treatment option in appropriate cases.
Unlike conventional external whitening, internal bleaching specifically addresses discoloration within the tooth.
The tooth is first evaluated to determine the cause and condition of the discoloration. If appropriate, internal bleaching can be performed as part of an individualized treatment plan.
The objective is to improve the appearance of the affected tooth while maintaining a conservative approach.
Management of Traumatic Dental Injuries
Dental trauma can affect the tooth structure, pulp, root, and surrounding tissues.
Injuries may occur because of falls, sports injuries, accidents, or other forms of impact.
Depending on the type and severity of the injury, a tooth may require monitoring, restorative treatment, endodontic treatment, or other appropriate dental care.
A timely evaluation is important after dental trauma because some changes within the tooth may not be immediately visible or symptomatic.
Traumatic dental injuries may include:
- Tooth fractures
- Cracks
- Dental trauma affecting the pulp
- Displacement of a tooth
- Injury to the supporting tissues
- Trauma-related discoloration
- Injuries involving previously treated teeth
Treatment is planned after assessing the condition of the tooth and surrounding structures, with the aim of preserving the tooth whenever clinically possible.
A Conservative Approach to Endodontic Care
The focus of endodontic treatment is not simply to relieve pain temporarily. Treatment planning considers the condition of the tooth, the source of the problem, the surrounding tissues, and the long-term ability to maintain the natural tooth.
Dr. Snehal Vachheta Kotak combines her training in Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics with clinical experience to provide individualized treatment for each patient.
The treatment approach is based on:
- Accurate diagnosis
- Understanding the source of dental pain
- Appropriate endodontic treatment
- Preservation of natural tooth structure
- Management of infection
- Individualized treatment planning
- Long-term functional and restorative considerations
When Should You Seek an Endodontic Evaluation?
A dental evaluation is recommended when you experience persistent or unexplained tooth pain, prolonged sensitivity, pain while chewing, swelling, recurring symptoms from a previously treated tooth, or dental problems following an injury.
Not every dental pain requires Root Canal Treatment. A proper clinical evaluation is important to identify the actual cause of the symptoms and determine whether endodontic treatment is appropriate.
No. Tooth pain can have several different causes. A clinical examination is necessary to identify the source of the pain and determine whether Root Canal Treatment is appropriate.
No. Single-sitting treatment is considered only when the clinical condition of the tooth makes it appropriate. The number of appointments depends on the individual case.
A previously treated tooth may develop symptoms because of persistent or recurrent infection, reinfection, leakage, untreated canal anatomy, or other dental problems. Further evaluation is required to identify the cause.
Root Canal Treatment is performed on a tooth receiving endodontic treatment for the first time. Re-Root Canal Treatment is performed on a tooth that has already undergone Root Canal Treatment but requires further treatment because of persistent or recurrent problems.
In some cases, appropriate endodontic treatment can address the infection while preserving the natural tooth. The treatment options depend on the condition and restorability of the tooth.
In selected cases, Internal Tooth Bleaching may be considered when discoloration originates from within a root-treated tooth.
A tooth affected by trauma should be professionally evaluated as soon as possible. Early assessment helps determine the condition of the tooth and whether monitoring or treatment is required.
When a tooth is suitable for endodontic treatment and can be adequately restored, Root Canal Treatment can be used to treat the internal dental problem while preserving the natural tooth.
